Naming File Attachments in SERFF

Did you know that when the file name of an attachment in SERFF is too long, downloading that file outside of SERFF is not possible?  This Tip is speaking to the file names for the PDF or other format of documents that appear as attachments under the State Required Supporting Documents tab or the Additional Supporting Documents tab in SERFF.  The issue is not the Supporting Document Name field; rather, it is the file name used to save and attach the document with a .pdf suffix, for example.

Best practice when naming SERFF file attachments is to use as short a name as possible without jeopardizing the attachment's identification.  For example, for an actuarial memorandum, shorten "Actuarial Memorandum" to "AM", for a statement of variability, use "SOV" instead of "statement of variability" and for other types of attachments, abbreviate as much as possible while still maintaining form identification such as "app" vs. "appendix", "par rate" vs. "participation rate" and "end" vs. "endorsement". Abbreviating in attachment names that allow the viewer to differentiate among the documents at a glance ensures efficient reviews, eliminates potential compliance issues, and reduces time to approval.
