Updating Filing Information in Approved Filings

Sometimes information included in an approved filing as part of the Filing Description (i.e., cover letter) needs to be updated. An example is a change in marketing/distribution strategy. In these cases, do not submit a new filing to communicate these updates; rather update the information directly in the approved filing by submitting a Filer-Reviewer Note.  Generally, new filings are limited to forms submitted for review or updating approved supporting documentation that appears under the State Required Supporting Documents tab of a SERFF filing such as a statement of variability or actuarial memorandum. Informational updates to the Filing Description that do not impact any State Required Supporting Documents of an approved filing can generally be made in a Filer-Reviewer Note. FIN 2017-1 provides filing guidance on what types of updates are appropriate for Supporting Documentation Update (SDU) filings.

Another example is advising of a change in the availability of approved forms or combinations. Such changes can be communicated by updating the Associated Filings and forms feature, supported by an explanatory Filer-Reviewer Note. A Supporting Documentation Update is not generally needed to inform about this type of change.

In the new SERFF platform, all of the suggestions in this Tip can be carried out without reopening the filing affected by the change. If you are unsure if a change requires a new filing or can be documented in the approved filing, please reach out to the Compact at comments@insurancecompact.org
